Navigation & Cruising Guide

Approach, hydrography, anchorages; a guide for visiting mariners to plan a safe and captivating arrival in Mahone Bay.

Approaches

Favourable Sailing Conditions

For vessels crossing the Gulf of Maine from New England or navigating eastward from the Bay of Fundy, the South Shore of Nova Scotia offers a dramatic shift in marine conditions. While the Bay of Fundy is infamous for the world's highest tides and multi-knot currents, Mahone Bay features a much smaller tidal range and negligible currents, overall a very agreeable sailing ground.

Frequently noted, the absence of thick and persistent fog that plagues other regions and the offshore, allows for scenic vistas and navigational ease throughout the summer and well into the autumn months.

Navigational Aids & Entrance

Seaward approaches are marked from west to east by lighthouses on Cross Island, Pearl Island and East Ironbound Island. Many navigational aids assist in charting a clear course to the Westhaver Island lighthouse and with Strum Island to starboard, this defines the seaward side of Mahone Harbour.

Further on a heading of about 308 degrees magnetic for 1.3 nautical miles brings you to the flashing red buoy (M72) which marks the start of the Mahone Bay Civic Marina mooring field. A large anchorage, seaward of the mooring field and Inchcape Rock, has good holding ground in muddy bottom.

The Legendary 365-Island Studded Bay

A multitude of protected anchorages, shielded from the prevailing ocean swells and easterly winds, our inclement weather direction. Visiting yachts are surrounded by the bay's varied waterways originally navigated by the Mi'kmaq and later favoured by colonial privateers and prohibition-era rum-runners.

MICA Islands

The Mahone Islands Conservancy Association (mahoneislands.ns.ca) is a local non-profit and environmentally conscientious organization that welcomes visiting sailors. In partnership with government and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, MICA has secured 24 islands and shorefront sites, with a location map available on their website.

Pristine and uncrowded beaches offered by MICA include public moorings, picnic tables and a locally unique island exploration experience.

Andrews, Sheep & Goat Islands

A trio of MICA sites just east of the Mahone Harbour mouth nestled against Gifford and Rouse Islands offers sheltered mooring and good anchoring for a more secluded setting just off the main waterways.

Coveys Island

One of MICA's more popular sites is only 3.3 nautical miles in a southeasterly direction from the Marina. The island's northwest facing Meiseners Cove sports a 300-metre-long sandy crescent beach backed by a saltwater pond.

Sacrifice & Long Islands

For a more rugged experience, a number of MICA sites are nestled in an area called the Rackets. At about 14 nautical miles southeast of the Marina along the westerly approach to Mahone Bay and in the shelter of these two islands, a panorama of the major outer islands (Tancook, Flat, East Ironbound) and the Atlantic Ocean span the horizon.

Why US Cruisers Are Heading North

Cruisers from Maine, Massachusetts, and further south are increasingly venturing across the Gulf of Maine, drawn by uncrowded anchorages and a refreshingly straightforward Canadian customs process that welcomes visiting mariners warmly.

"Nova Scotia is what Maine was fifty years ago: unparalleled tranquillity, uncrowded surroundings, and genuinely welcoming local populations." Frequently cited by cruisers navigating the North Atlantic seaboard

The Mahone Bay Civic Marina is perfectly positioned to capture this migratory demographic, offering the pristine environments and authentic cultural experiences that modern cruisers actively seek.

Practical Navigation Tips

Course Plotting

Vigilant navigation is essential for the approach as islands are increasingly numerous and channels more defined. Lighthouses on East Ironbound, Pearl and Cross Islands, most prominent on the initial approach, give way to numerous navigation marks (spars, cans and buoys) further inshore.

Island Terrain

The islands, drumlins formed during the last ice age, are composed of gravel, sand and clays and are often armored with gravel and boulder shallows on the seaward side. Conversely, coves with sandy beaches are common where the islands' shores face the mainland being the more protected side.

Tidal Conditions

Unlike the Bay of Fundy's extreme tidal condition, Mahone Bay features manageable 2 metre (6 foot) tidal ranges with currents generally less than one knot. However, always consult tide tables.

Weather

The South Shore generally enjoys clearer conditions throughout summer and early autumn offering the best visibility for scenic navigation through the archipelago. Typically, outside the easterly flow of inclement weather, winds are calm to light onshore westerly to northerly breezes in mornings and evenings. With the developing offshore breezes into the afternoons, these southerly to westerly winds generally build before subsiding towards evening.

Mooring Reservations

The floating dock offers seven slip spaces alongside 54 moorings. Transient slips fill rapidly in July and August. Contact the marina in advance to secure your berth.

Island Hopping

Use the Civic Marina as your secure base for daily excursions. Visit MICA's website to plan excursions to moor and anchor at their selection of nearly 30 island and coastal sites. An evening sunset return to our snug marina and harbour tops off a day of exploring the bay's hidden treasures.
