Events & Festivals
A strategic, event-driven tourism model that extends the season from summer schooner races to winter festivities.
Heritage BoatYard Weekend & Schooner Races
Directly relevant to the Civic Marina's core demographic, the annual Heritage BoatYard Weekend celebrates the region's wooden boatbuilding traditions. Organized by the Heritage BoatYard Co-op, this highly attended event is the highlight of the summer season.
What to expect:
- Historic talks on shipbuilding heritage and maritime culture
- Live music and food vendors on the wharf
- Live restoration of traditional skiffs using original tools
- Nova Scotia Schooner Association Annual Schooner Races
- A breathtaking fleet of classic wooden vessels in the bay
For the cruising enthusiast, timing a port call to coincide with this festival offers unparalleled immersion into Atlantic Canada's maritime heritage.
Scarecrow Festival
Leveraging the stunning autumn foliage and cooler weather, the Scarecrow Festival transforms the town into a whimsical, highly photogenic spectacle. Scheduled for September 26 – October 13, the festival coincides with the latter part of the cruising season.
Festival highlights:
- Over 250 life-size, handcrafted scarecrows posed in whimsical vignettes
- Themes ranging from classic Halloween figures to pop-culture icons
- Scarecrow Village Market with local artisans and crafters
- Live music and family-friendly activities
- Stunning autumn foliage throughout the harbour
A unique draw for late-season sailors making their way south before winter. The combination of autumn colour, creative displays, and cooler sailing weather makes this a memorable final port call.
Season of Father Christmas
Operating from November 28 – December 24, this winter festival sustains the local economy after the marina's haul-out phase. While recreational boating is dormant, the festival ensures the terrestrial hospitality and retail sectors remain financially robust.
Winter festivities include:
- Over 100 uniquely crafted Father Christmas figures throughout town
- Horse-drawn wagon rides along the waterfront
- Elf scavenger hunts for families
- Late-night shopping events with special merchant offers
- Warm hospitality and festive ambiance in every shop and inn
This festival maintains the high-quality infrastructure that supports the marina during the summer, ensuring that dining, retail, and accommodation establishments thrive year-round.
