Environment & Sustainability

Committed to environmental marina stewardship through living shorelines, community engagement, and climate resilience.

The Living Shoreline Project

A pioneering collaboration replacing rigid seawalls with natural ecosystems to combat coastal erosion and sea-level rise.

Initiated following a comprehensive 2016 flood prevention report, the Living Shoreline Project is a collaborative effort between the Town of Mahone Bay and the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation.

The project replaces rigid, failing seawalls along Edgewater Street with natural salt marshes, lush native plantings, and protective rocky barriers. This nature-based approach addresses climate-induced threats.

2026 Expansion: Coastal Action has announced a 100-metre expansion of the demonstration site, with construction scheduled to last 4 to 6 weeks and planting of the tidal wetland set for Spring 2026.

Nature-Based Solutions

Salt marshes and native plantings replace rigid seawalls, creating natural barriers that absorb wave energy and adapt organically to rising sea levels.

Active Transportation Trail

A 450-metre trail for pedestrians and cyclists, equipped with national-standard safety railings, marrying environmental resilience with recreational utility.

Community Engagement

The town actively engages residents in climate adaptation, conducting surveys on risk perception and distributing 72-hour emergency kits through community draws.

What This Means for Visiting Boaters

For the eco-conscious mariner, Mahone Bay's environmental initiatives translate directly into a superior port-call experience:

  • Cleaner harbour water through pump-out facilities and pollution management
  • Enhanced visual aesthetics with natural shoreline plantings and restored wetlands
  • Immediate access to scenic onshore activities including the 450m active transportation trail
  • A harbour that adapts to climate change rather than fighting it with rigid infrastructure
Modern mariners increasingly seek out and reward environmentally compliant facilities. Eco-conscious cruisers actively choose destinations that demonstrate genuine environmental stewardship, and Mahone Bay leads the way.
